Our Accomplished Chefs Make Us One Of San Diego CA Restaurants

Featuring awe-inspiring "fusion" cuisine and voted "Best Sushi Restaurant" for seven consecutive years by San Diego Magazine, Café Japengo owes much of its success to its incredibly talented chefs. Chief among these accomplished masters is Executive Sushi Chef Jerry Warner, who has been with our landmark San Diego CA restaurant since our doors opened in 1990.

Warner's passion for cooking dates back to his college years, when he accepted a position at a Japanese restaurant owned by one of his professors. In 1990 Warner joined Café Japengo's inaugural crew - spending the next six years as the personal apprentice to Master Sushi Chef Osamu "Fuji" Fujita, who eventually became Corporate Sushi Chef for Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

Since his promotion to Executive Sushi Chef in 1996, Warner has helped lead Café Japengo to numerous awards and accolades, including the California Restaurant Association's Gold Medallion Award for Best Sushi in both 2005 and 2006. Warner also was named "Master Sushi Chef - Best of Show" at the 2005 California Rice Commission Sushi Masters Competition.

After 16 years of preparing spectacular La Jolla dining, this master craftsman particularly enjoys creating the Stuffed Tomato Tuna Sashimi and his own Yellowtail Ceviche creation. Chef Warner's career highlights include:
  • 1990: Joined the culinary team that opened Café Japengo.
  • 1990-1996: Served as the personal apprentice to Master Sushi Chef Osamu "Fuji" Fujita.

  • 2005: Named "Master Sushi Chef - Best of Show" at the 2005 California Rice Commission Sushi Masters Competition.
